New domain name registration rules for Lithuania

Coat of arms Lithuanian Government has adopted new rules for usage of Lithuanian official country name in .lt domain names. In fact this is the first legal act whatsoever to regulate registration of domain names in Lithuania. Although Lithuanian domain name registry has rules, theses rules, although applied, are not legal act, but a part of the domain name registration agreement.

The new rules indicate that a person wanting to register a domain name with “Lithuania” or “Republic of Lithuania” shall ask for permission from the Communication regulation board (Ryšių reguliavimo tarnyba) of the Republic of Lithuania. Permission is needed for using of “Lithuania” or “Republic of Lithuania” in any official language of the European Union. Therefore permission to use words “Litauen”, “Litwa”, “Lituanie”, etc. will be needed as well. The permission will not be needed for those who have registered trademarks or business names with “Lithuania” in them.

One more restriction – if one obtains the right to use ”Lithuania” in his/her domain name, the website must be launched in 3 months. Otherwise the permission will expire.

Also, usage of the domain name with “Lithuania” can not be immoral, unethical or harm reputation of Lithuania.
